Out
of Eden "Hymns" Review by Deborah Lee
Growing
up, I wasn't a big fan of hymns. I found hymns, at least in the way that they
were arranged and sung at my childhood church, to be quite dull. The lack of "beats"
and "catchy hooks" made whatever profound meanings these hymn lyrics
had to offer fall on deaf ears. And from what I've gathered among other music
lovers of my generation, I think it's safe to say that I wasn't the only one in
this boat.
That
being said, Out of Eden took upon a rather difficult project and has done a fantastic
job of "making old things new." By juxtaposing ancient lyrics with modern
sounds of R&B, funk, soul, and even rock, Out of Eden breathes new life into
these age-old hymns. It's taken listening to "Hymns" to open my deafened
ears.
So
what am I hearing now that I haven't heard before? The profound lyrics! The catchy
beats and musical phrases quickly disarmed any pretenses I had, allowing me to
clearly hear the time-tested truths found in the lyrics of songs such as "Be
Still My Soul," and "My Faith Has Found a Resting Place," which
have both become my personal favorites.
Lisa
Kimmey said, "Our only hope is to somehow capture the spirit and essence
of these hymns and use our voice to carry that message to a new generation, but
most importantly bless the Lord. It's our tribute."
Lisa
- I am that new generation. Thank you for opening my ears. And I know that there
are many more ears that will be opened through "Hymns."
